Listening to “Mr. Red” by Cek & The Stompers felt like discovering a hidden gem in the world of blues. Released on June 28th, 2024, under Gulf Coast Records, this album instantly drew me in with its genuine and heartfelt tribute to the blues tradition. Led by Cek Franceschetti, who’s been a stalwart in the blues scene across Europe and the U.S. since the ’90s, the band brings a mix of experience and passion that’s palpable in every track.
The album kicks off with the title track, “Mr. Red,” which immediately struck a chord with me. It’s a touching homage to the legendary Louisiana Red, and you can feel Cek’s deep connection to the material. His soulful voice, coupled with his adeptness on the dobro and acoustic guitar, paints a vivid picture of his experiences with American blues. It’s a powerful way to set the tone for the album.
As I continued to listen, I found myself particularly enchanted by “Juanita.” This track has an infectious melody that stayed with me long after the music stopped. It’s a perfect blend of traditional blues with a modern twist, showcasing the band’s ability to keep the genre fresh and relevant. The reimagined version of J.J. Cale’s “Thirteen Days” was another standout for me. They’ve managed to breathe new life into the classic, giving it a unique spin while maintaining the essence of the original.
“Breakin’ Deal” was a track that really resonated with me on an emotional level. The storytelling is so raw and honest, it’s like hearing someone pour their heart out. The instrumental interplay throughout the album is stellar, with Luca Manenti’s guitar work providing a dynamic and sometimes electrifying presence. Andrea Corvaglia’s harmonica lines are like a haunting breeze, weaving in and out of the songs, adding that quintessential blues feel. Meanwhile, Pietro Gozzini’s double bass and Federica Zanotti’s percussion provide a solid, rhythmic backbone that grounds the entire ensemble.
The production quality of “Mr. Red” is top-notch. Recorded at Monolith Studio in Brescia and mixed at Poddighe Studio, the sound is clean and warm, allowing each instrument to shine through beautifully. I really appreciated the clarity and balance in the mix, thanks to the combined efforts of producer Luca Manenti, engineer Michele Marelli, and the Poddighe brothers on mixing and mastering.
